Art & Design
'Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.’
National Curriculum
Intent
At Sythwood Primary and Nursery School, we believe that art is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum which further develops a child’s cultural capital. Art gives pupils the opportunity to think creatively, become more resilient and grow both in confidence and independence; skills that are essential in all subjects and throughout life. Our art curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to develop and extend skills using a range of media and materials through drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art. Pupils are also introduced to a range of works by different artists to increase knowledge of the styles they use, communicate their interest and raise their aspirations. Through exploring their own creativity and learning about famous artists, pupils will learn to value the impact of art and feel a strong sense of achievement, celebrating their unique talents in the art they produce.
